Reflections @ Bukit Chandu & Labrador Secret Tunnels

Dear pupils, you may like to watch this video before we visit the museum, Reflections @ Bukit Chandu, next week. Would you like to wear the heavy metal helmet (below), which was possibly used in WWII?

We will also be visiting the Labrador Secret Tunnels on the same day. Click on the words in yellow to find out more:)

飲水思源

飲水思源 means "when you drink water, remember the source". What does it mean to drink the packet of Milo? Did Mr Leow want you to remember which company manufactured Milo?
I was pleasantly surprised to see many ex-Rosythians visiting their primary school teachers last Friday. Some of the pupils whom I taught in 2006 and 2007 came forward to say hello to me. Darren, who won a scholarship at the Singapore Sports School, brought some mandarin oranges for me. I am pleased that these pupils remember their primary school and the teachers who had helped them along the way.
I wish my pupils will remember what their parents, relatives and teachers have done to nurture them.
Happy Lunar New Year 2009!

Dengue Alert!

"Can Aedes mosquitoes live in saltwater?" What do you think?
Here's the answer.

Let's fight Dengue! Call 1800-333 7777 if you have found a spot which can be a mosquito breeding ground. We must first prevent the breeding of the Aedes mosquitoes (carrier) in order to prevent the spread of dengue fever.

The Aedes mosquito has distinctive black and white stripes on its body. It usually breeds in clean, stagnant water. We can get rid of the Aedes mosquito by frequently checking and removing stagnant water.

Life Cycle of a Beetle

Hello pupils, if you like the creepy crawlies, you can ask your parents' permission to bring home some mealworms. Don't worry if you are afraid of mealworms, you can observe their growth on the videos below. Thanks to Mr Siva for sharing:)

Have a good weekend!

Kangaroo!

Some of my pupils were surprised when I shared that kangaroo meat is sold in Australia. Here's a shop selling various types of meat in Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne.

Well, kangaroos are too cute to be served on our dinner plates, right? Here's one of my pictures taken with kangaroos at the Ballarat Wildlife Park.

Cycles: What causes the 4 seasons?

I hope this video will help you understand why Earth has four seasons. Do you know why Singapore does not experience winter?

Have you asked a good question today? Have you made an effort to find out about what you do not know?

Thank you, Brendan and mummy!

Brendan's mother highlighted a link to my ex-pupil's blog earlier. It appears that her blog has been used without her knowledge. I will alert her on her blog tomorrow.

I have decided to remove links to my ex-pupils' (2007) blogs as most of them have stopped blogging. Next, if you are unable to access some of the photographs from my blog, it is because the photo storage site which I had used has closed about a year ago. I will find another site to store any new photographs.

I learnt an important lesson today! I must check my blog links regularly.

Isidor Isaac Rabi

Isidor Isaac Rabi was the winner of The Nobel Prize in Physics (1944).

Isidor Isaac Rabi (1898 - 1988)

Once someone asked why he chose to become a scientist and not a lawyer, a doctor or a businessman. He responded:

"My mother made me a scientist without ever intending it. Every other Jewish mother in Brooklyn would ask her child after school: "So? Did you learn anything today?" But not my mother. She always asked me a different question. "Izzy," she would say, "did you ask a good question today?" That difference--asking good questions-- made me become a scientist!"

Keep asking questions! Did you ask a good question today?
