Have you taken your blood pressure lately? The P5s had the opportunity to learn more about High Blood Pressure and what they can do to minimise the chances of getting it.

The pupils learnt that 1 in 4 Singaporean adults have high blood pressure and children whose parents have high blood pressure have a 28% chance of getting it. It is definitely is a cause for concern.

Following the Lunar New Year holidays, the Chinese Language Department announced that P5 Respectful was awarded 'Bronze' for the classroom decorations. Well done, pupils!

The pupils had a good break during the CNY holidays in Term 1 Week 7 and after that, they had to prepare for their CA1 examinations. I'm sure they wish that their holidays didn't end so early.

I hope they will excel in their examinations next week. All the best!

Term 1 Week 5 & 6

It had been a busy week. On 4 February 2010, my wife gave birth to my boy, Nathanial. Yes, the joy is beyond words and I'm sure parents can attest to that.

Fortunately, the relief teacher was able to carry out the tasks assigned. I will follow up on what the pupils have learnt.

On 10 February 2010, P5 Respectful visited the Singapore Discovery Centre. The pupils learnt about the importance of Total Defence. They also had hands-on experience with several Civil Defence equipment. Some pupils tried to use the fire extinguisher and a few tried the 'Tremolator' - a machine that simulates earthquakes - and learning what to do in such an event.

Tomorrow, Rosyth will be celebrating Chinese New Year in school. I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy lunar new year!

Term 1 Week 4

On 27 January 2010, P5 Respectful visited the Parliament House. However, we were not allowed to take pictures inside the building. Nevertheless, the pupils had time to snap some pictures outside the old Parliament House (where the elephant statue is) and City Hall, the building where the Japanese officially surrendered to the British towards the end of World War 2.

In one of the cloze passages, the pupils learnt 'Beauty lies/is in the eyes of the beholder'. I gave an example using the chinese equivalent, 情人眼裡出西施. Hopefully, the pupils will be able to use this saying.

Lunar New Year is around the corner and the pupils will be decorating the classroom in Week 5.

Visit to Bukit Chandu and Labrador Secret Tunnels

My visit to Bukit Chandu Museum and Labrador Secret Tunnels

How are you? Are you feeling better? I would like to tell you about my visit to Bukit Chandu and Labrador Park. Firstly, I will tell you about my visit to Bukit Chandu Museum.

When we arrived at Bukit Chandu Museum, we saw a statue of three men who fought for Singapore. We took many photos there. We also took a class photo. Shortly after that, an elderly man brought us into the museum. He brought us to a mini theatre. Over there, we saw a short clip about how the British and Japanese fought. Then, the tour guide told us that the toughest battle was at Bukit Chandu.

Next, I will tell you about my visit to Labrador Park. We walked through some of the tunnels where the British stayed. The tunnels were quite dark and one of them was quite hot. The tunnels were built in the 1880s. There were some holes on top of the tunnels. Those were the ventilation holes. Then the tour guide brought us to another tunnel. That tunnel was even darker than the previous tunnel. The floor was built with metal.

飲水思源 means "when you drink water, remember the source". What does it mean to drink the packet of Milo? Did Mr Leow want you to remember which company manufactured Milo?

I was pleasantly surprised to see many ex-Rosythians visiting their primary school teachers last Friday. Some of the pupils whom I taught in 2006 and 2007 came forward to say hello to me. Darren, who won a scholarship at the Singapore Sports School, brought some mandarin oranges for me. I am pleased that these pupils remember their primary school and the teachers who had helped them along the way.

I wish my pupils will remember what their parents, relatives and teachers have done to nurture them.

Hello! It has been a year since I last blogged. Sorry...I was posting most of my pictures on Facebook and ignored this blog for a while. Well, what did Mr Leow do over the past year then?

In 2008, I spent a fruitful year studying at the University of Melbourne, Australia and I made many new friends from all over the world too! Here are some pictures taken at the university. The first picture shows the clock tower at South Lawn.

Snow City 3 September 2007

Pupils from P4 Youthful, P5 Victorious and P5 Resilient had a great time playing in the 'snow' in sunny Singapore. Click here for more pictures.

They also learnt to make ice-cream. Here's the programme outline.

The programme opens with a brief history of ice cream. The different ingredients used in making ice cream are then presented to students. Different techniques in making ice cream will be discussed, with emphasis on the use of liquid nitrogen. Students will be asked to form small groups, and together they will prepare their group’s ice cream using liquid nitrogen. On top of that, students will get the chance to savour the ice cream that they have prepared. The experience is expected to be memorable for the students. They get to learn science concepts such as transmission of heat energy by conduction, effects of heat exchange, and thermal properties of matter. The multi-sensory experience provided by this programme helps to cement the students’ understanding of various science concepts further.

I hear and I forget. I see and I understand. I experience and I remember.

Dear P5 pupils, what makes a good leader? In class, we discussed that a good leader cannot be popular all the time. Sometimes, he/she has to make difficult decisions.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew, our current Minister Mentor, spoke on the traits of a good Member of Parliament (MP) in the 1977 Debate on the President's Address. The making of a good MP is like "a marathon, not a hundred yard sprint". He highlighted "courage, loyalty and steadfastness..." Click here and choose 1977 to find out more.

P4 Youthful visited Reflections @ Bukit Chandu on 3 April 2007. Mr Gabriel, a retired teacher, was one of the guides who shared many stories which happened after the Japanese attacked Singapore on 15 February 1942. Many pupils were shocked to hear how the Japanese soldiers ill-treated many Singaporeans during World War 2. The pupils also visited Labrador Park and saw 6-inch firing guns and secret tunnels used by the British. Click here for more pictures.

Too 'Tuff' To Puff @ Rosyth

On 8 March, 2007, Rosyth welcomed Mr Freddie Kee, an ex-principal, who gave an excellent sharing on anti-smoking. He captured his audience's attention and punctuated his speech with humour. Several teachers wondered where and how I had got his services. Well, he is with a company which Health Promotion Board has engaged to conduct anti-smoking talks for schools.

Over 2 days (8 & 9 March), many pupils had the opportunity to cheer for their teachers who took part in the Street Soccer Teachers' Challenge(Male & Female. Yes! Rosyth Female teachers can play soccer too!) In the Primary 4 Inter-class Street Soccer Competition, P4 Integrity (Girls) emerged champions while P4 Diligent clinched the gold for Boys. Sharing of Portfolio Best Works

P5 Victorious and P5 Resilient pupils take turns to share their portfolio best works.

Vernetta shares her findings about Inuka, the polar bear in the Singapore Zoological Gardens, and the effects of global warming on polar bears.

I have encouraged my pupils to take on Community Involvement Projects (CIP) in their best works. Many pupils have found out that they must be above 17 years in order to volunteer. However, that does not mean they cannot help the community at their age. Lim Wei Khai rose to the challenge and helped Metta School to make cookies. Well done, Wei Khai!

In the portfolio best works, pupils also learn to make their own games and link social studies concepts such as 'interdependence' to the games.

Snow City 25 Nov 2006

Pupils from P4-10, P5-14 and P5-15 went on a motivational excursion to Snow City on 25 Nov 2006. The pupils earned this trip, which was meant to spur them to excel in their academic studies and behaviour.

After what the pupils had experienced at Snow City, they had many fond memories e.g. playing in the snow with their peers and teachers, eating ice-cream at -8 degrees and discovering the wonders of what Liquid Nitrogen can do.

Special thanks to Mrs Fiona Ng, Ms Noel Lim & Ms Khoo for helping me in this excursion. We wished Mrs Esther Koh, Ms Karen Lee & Ms Ho Soh Heng had joined us too. However, they had to attend to school or personal matters.

Yippeee! Rosyth celebrated Children's Day out of school on Friday, 29th September 2006! The Primary 4 pupils were at the Singapore Discovery Centre. Once agan, many thanks to Mrs Chee (Shaun's mom) who took time to help us. Mr Vincent Lee was there to help us with the pupils' discipline too. (Thanks!)

Hello Merlion!

Thanks to Mrs Chee (Shaun's mom) who took time to go on our Math & Science Trail. She was enthusiastic and helped pupils to learn at the various stations. After we had completed our assignment at the Esplanade, we visited the Merlion at the mouth of Singapore River.

Do you know the origin of the Merlion, a creature with a lion head and a fish's body? Well, the Merlion is a product of the Singapore Tourism Board to help promote our country in the early 1970s. On 15 September 2002, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew opened the new Merlion park, where we took our picture.

Last week, I encouraged my pupils to pen their thoughts on kind acts which someone had shown them. For me, I would like to thank my parents who have always been supportive of me all these years.

When I was a child, my parents had to work long hours to make ends meet. My parents had to work late and I would not have meals at home. However, my parents always made sure that I had enough money to eat. They also did not have to worry about my studies. I always made sure that I would not disappoint them. I understood that they worked hard for the family so I wanted them to be proud of me.

I am thankful for my parents.

We must first prevent the breeding of the Aedes mosquitoes (carrier) in order to prevent the spread of dengue fever. The Aedes mosquito has distinctive black and white stripes on its body. It usually breeds in clean, stagnant water. We can get rid of the Aedes mosquito by frequently checking and removing stagnant water.

My December Holidays 2005

My wife and I were in Paris and we visited the Eiffel Tower. It cost $10.70 Euro (about S$21.40) per person to travel to the top of the tower. You can find out more about the Eiffel Tower here. We also travelled to Switzerland and the scenery there is simply breath-taking.

Besides the cold winter holidays, I had a fun time learning to surf. I'm still at the beginner stage. Perhaps next year, I can spend more time learning with a smaller surf board.

They were my pupils from Chua Chu Kang Primary School (1999-2000) - Serene, LiJia, Kwang Wei, Edwin, Pelvin, Matthew and Shi Rong. Thank you for taking precious time to come all the way to my house on Teachers' Day. It is really heartening to see all of you again and remembering the time we had spent learning together. Yes, I also learn from you. Let me share with you what I had learnt 10 years ago.

Visit to Yakult Factory

I promised to take my two Math classes to Yakult Factory if they met their targets in their Prelim exams. I'm proud to say many of them did well, but surely, some had to work much harder. So, Mr Fernando, his wife and Mrs Claire Yeoh helped me with the factory visit. I'm sure they enjoyed the trip as much as I did.

When we reached Yakult Factory at Senoko Drive, Ms Chin, the Public Relations Officer, came to welcome us. She introduced us to her manager, Mr Quek. (He's not Mr Quek by the way..hehe)

Mr Quek has worked for Yakult for the past 27 years. Wow! I had not expected such a great speech to motivate the students prior to their PSLE. Mr Quek was punctuating his speech with hilarious jokes and annecdotes which made the students roar with laughter. He gave excellent real-life examples of the importance of education and shared the history of Yakult with the pupils . For example, in 1930, Dr. Minoru Shirota succeeded in culturing and utilizing lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota).
